Mark Theder has specialized in the development, financing, design and construction of healthcare facilities for more than 20 years. Prior to joining Summit Smith, he was a senior executive with AMDC Corp., a nationwide healthcare real estate development and program management company. Before joining AMDC, Mark helped lead two nationwide developers of ambulatory facilities in the positions of President & CEO, Senior Vice President – Development and Vice President – Development. Earlier in his career, Mr. Theder was an investment counselor and financial planner with Prudential Securities.
Jerry W. Spencer
Chairman and Head of Design

Jerry Spencer has planned, designed, developed and constructed healthcare facilities for more than 30 years and has been a licensed architect for 28 years. He has served as design director, vice president for architecture and senior vice president for architecture for two other nationwide healthcare facility development firms. Earlier in his career, he was a consulting architect and construction coordinator for the University of Chicago, and a senior project architect for two international architectural organizations based in Chicago – Harry Weese, Ltd., and Stanley Tigerman, AIA. Many of the buildings designed by Mr. Spencer have won awards for design excellence.
Andy Palec
Vice President – Development

Andy Palec has extensive experience in project development, planning and financing of healthcare real estate and senior housing. Before joining Summit Smith, Andy was involved in large, medium and small developments, including numerous outpatient facilities and medical office buildings with a nationwide healthcare facility development firm. He also coordinated assisted living development for Extendicare, a nationwide long term care operator, and co-founded a residential care company in Wisconsin.
Sean Roberts

Sean Roberts has extensive project development, planning and management experience. Prior to joining Summit Smith, Sean served as a consultant to several private development firms, municipalities and redevelopment authorities. Before becoming a private consultant, Sean served as a Senior Project Development Specialist for the City of Pittsburgh’s Urban Redevelopment Authority. In this role, Sean oversaw public/private partnerships and secured over $50 million in state, local and federal funds that catalyzed private development of former Brownfield sites. Sean graduated from Carnegie Mellon University’s Heinz College Graduate School of Public Policy with a specialization in Economic Development.

Tom Baker has been involved in all aspects of the construction, design, engineering, development and financing of healthcare facilities throughout his 46 years at C.D. Smith Construction. As President and CEO from 1978 through 2000, Tom guided C.D. Smith to become one of the largest and most successful general contracting and construction management companies in Wisconsin. Mr. Baker became chairman of the board of C.D. Smith in 2000. As the current Chairman of C.D. Smith and a Principal of Summit Smith, Tom maintains the focus of our goal: Always exceed the client’s expectations.
Gary Smith

Gary Smith has been involved in all aspects of the construction, design, engineering, development and financing of healthcare facilities throughout his 28 years at C.D. Smith Construction. Gary joined the company in 1974 after receiving a civil engineering degree from Marquette University in 1974. As the President of C.D. Smith and a Principal of Summit Smith, Gary makes sure that the tradition of exceeding client expectations that C.D. Smith clients have come to know and expect is fulfilled by both C.D Smith and Summit Smith.

Director of Construction Services – Summit Smith Healthcare Facilities
Mike has 22 years of experience in the construction industry. The past 12 years have been with C.D. Smith Construction. Mike has extensive experience working with carpentry, concrete, masonry and steel erection with special expertise in medical facilities. Mike participates during the planning and design phases for Summit Smith projects to implement value engineering and to evaluate constructability. He is the construction management leader in Summit Smith project teams from planning through occupancy to ensure projects are completed on time and on budget. Mike manages medical facility projects for Summit Smith Healthcare Facilities and C.D Smith Construction throughout the United States.
